HIHI! You're all starting school tomorrow. SO JIA YOU!! Study hard ok haha don't slack!

Especially WENDY TAY ok! Sec 4 already. 'N' levels this year! Don't sleep in class or anything ok!! Don't memorise answers hor, must UNDERSTAND! And and, just keep doing TYS! =D

And leexean and siti, sec 3 still ok de lah =x Don't need go home chiong one. Just listen in class, do your homework, and ask when in doubt, can already. BUT if you see the teacher don't know how to teach or completely don't give homework one hor, don't be happy ok. Once you encounter this kind of teacher you must work harder on that subject already. Must study yourself. If not next year you'll be cursing the teacher alrdy. Haha!

AND AND stephanie!! this year streaming year right? hahahha, jyjy lah! personally I think Maths is the most important one in lower sec lah. Because they don't reteach the things. It's like continuous one. Other subjects (lit, hist, geog) they're teaching things that won't be tested in 'O' levels. But maths won't one. SOOOOOOOOOOO die die must do well in maths!! Science not as important as maths in sec 2 but still important lah. Because it's like the foundation. Will help you in upper sec. But if you don't rly understand it, sec 3 they'll teach again la. (unless your teacher assumes that you know alrdy)

As you know we are preparing for next year SYF so we have to work extra hard.
Firstly, Mr Allan had said please remember to write all the accidentals in the new score that you get. Anything that you dont know please circle it up or note it down and ask him or mr wong the next practice.
Secondly, GET the song from me or any seniors, band member that have it or you can ask mr wong.
Thirdly, listen to the song at least 5 time. look through our parts, any parts we dont know lets work it out together or ask Mr Allan :D
Ohya please suggest a day you can go out.. because he wants a upper brass outing == so i think we have no choice? haha! lets discuss with the trumpet section ok? :D

Stephanie remember to do the homework that tutor gave, he gave it a long time ago you should have gotten it done already. Notes which have sharps or flats. fingure out rhythm and your fingerings, get the recording if you need it also.

This is not referring to anyone in particular.

Anyway, like what Mr Wong said, please please please please inform your section mates or Mr Wong that'll you'll not be coming or you'll be late for some particular VALID reasons. If you are those kind that don't have a phone or those who don't answer your phone when people call please do make an extra effort to do so. If not what are the rest of the section mate supposed to say when Irina, Clarence or even Mr Wong ask "Where is (whoever who is missing)?" And when that happens we'll be told to call but you don't even answer our calls, then what are we supposed to do. I'm sure you all don't want that to happen right. :) So, let's be responsible people alright! Hehehe, yeah i guess that's all. Bye~

Here are some 'COOL' things we should know about french horn long ago! but its not too late! let read on together and know more about our instrument!!! lets produce a better sound together as well as increasing our knowledge about french horn!!! :D
FRENCH HORN

The French horn (simply known as "the horn" among classical musicians) is unique in the world of brass instruments. Though the fingerings of the horn follow the same basic concept as other instruments, the physics of this unique instrument make for a wider range of fingering complications and opportunities for the player.

Partials

Like all brass instruments, the horn produces pitch based on the principle of acoustic science known as the overtone series. This principle refers to the fact that any vibrating object (such as a horn) will vibrate at a series of sympathetic, or similar, vibrations. For brass players, this means that buzzing your lips into an instrument will result in a feeling of locking in place with several spaced-out pitches which resonate clearly. These pitch spaces are called "partials."

The longer a horn is, the more partials a player can play on it. The higher you get in a horn's overtone series, the closer together the partials become, meaning that it require less motion in the muscles of the players lips, or embouchure, in order to change from one note to another. A smaller horn, with less tubing, will have fewer partials overall.

The French horn is made up of nearly as much tubing as a tuba, though it is a much smaller instrument. As a result, it has an extremely large number of partials spaced closely together.

Valves

The keys on the horn, which are controlled by the fingers, control the opening and closing of valves. When these valves are open, they allow the flow of air into more of the tubes of the horn, effectively making the horn a longer instrument. When open valves are combined, the air flows into both open chambers.

When the horn becomes effectively longer, it operates on a different overtone series. This means that by fingering valves, the player can choose notes from several overtones and thus, fill out the entire western chromatic scale.

Fingering combinations

Each valve has a different effect on the pitch currently being played. The second valve lowers the pitch by a half step, the first valve by a whole step, and the third valve by three a step and a half. When valves are combined, these numbers are added. For example, holding down the first and second valves together will lower the pitch by a step and a half just as the third valve alone will do, while holding down all three keys of the horn lowers the tone by three whole steps. This means that multiple valve combinations will play the same note.

Two horns

A professional horn (as opposed to a student model) is really two instruments in one. Normally, the horn plays in the key of F, but when the trigger is pulled down, some of the tubing is blocked and the horn becomes shorter, pitched in B flat. This means that the horn has two sets of fingerings, depending on whether the player is playing on the B flat side or the F side.

Intonation

Western music uses a system of intonation where concert "A" equals 338 to 440 vibrations per second and all other notes are calibrated in relation to this, with some additional adjusting required for certain types of chords. Unfortunately, the natural harmonics of the horn do not always align precisely with these measurements. So, in order be in tune with her fellow musicians, the horn player must make slight adjustments when playing.

In addition to adjusting pitch using embouchure and hand position, horn players must make choices about the best fingerings to use in certain passages of music. This is because while two different fingerings may play more or less the same pitch, they will be tuned slightly differently depending on how high or low a certain fingering places the note in the overtone series of the horn at its current configuration. The process of choosing the best fingering is one of trial and error and its success largely dependent on the experience of the player.

Dear Horn section!

I'm sorry that past few weeks im unable to study with you guys as i everytime got things to do. i will try to at least study with you all once or twice a week ok? I know i have a bad habit of being late and skip school but from now onwards i try not to skip school or even if i want skip i skip on none band day ok? for being late i will try to wake up earlier. or ask either one of you to give me morning call lo haha. psps. I apologise for last friday i was feeling really bad i skip school and didnt go for band but that day i really cannot go because as you know the whole band went down to the parade square for reharsal and there is lots of teacher. i skip school and go for band i will get truency. i wanted to go band but i cant so im very sorry i will try not to skip school. if i skip on band day accidently i will try to come for band no matter wat okay?

So how did last week's meeting go? I bet it went fine.

BUT I KNOW YOU ALL DIDN'T CARRY OUT WHAT YOU PLANNED! Aiyo, plan already don't carry out, then we meet for what? Wendy, i hope you hadn't thrown away the paper. Lol.

I step down already, you all have to function on your own. Even though last time, as an SL, i wasn't harsh on you all, but you guys are having SYF next year. Don't tell me you all want another Silver? That's no progress leh. I know it's partially my fault that i wasn't very erm... strict on you all, but... learn to pick it up, ok? I mean, this standard is ok if you guys don't want to improve. But if you all want to be better, you have to do something.

And i don't understand what kind of feud you guys are having now. Nothing seems to work, does it? Like this, cannot. Like that, also cannot. Honestly, i also don't know what to do.

As a section, work out these problems. Find the root of it and solve it. It can't go on like this forever.

Wendy, you're the SL leh. 你做的每一件事，每一个决定，都会影响到他们的。I know you're trying, but not enough. Did you carry out what you all decided to do last week? You can't say you forgot what you have to do. You should have kept the paper, remind yourself and the section. If you're never gonna start, the section's never going to improve. And we all agreed to study together as a section, but you're always not available. I know you have a large circle of friends, but try to take some time out for your section, ok? Don't make your members feel like the section don't matter to you. Also, pleeeeeeeeeeeaaasssee kick the habit of being late and skipping school. Last Friday is an example. You skipped school and as a result you can't go for band practice. When you decided to skip school, did you think of your section? They treat you as an SL leh. You're their role model. In the future, or maybe now, they would want to play just like you. They might want to be an SL just like you. If you keep being late for this and that, skipping school, it's quite likely they will follow your example. I'm sure you don't want to see a day where your section skips school and ends up not being able to go for band, right?

Siti & leexean, I don't know what's with you guys, really. But you do know this is going to affect your relationship even in band, right? One of you will be taking up Wendy's position next year. So what are you guys going to do by then?

Stephanie, you're trying hard, i know. Keep it up. Please remember to hand in your homework though, your seniors may forget. Since you're the more carefree person in the section, it'll be easier for you to remember. Hahaha... Oh and please play out more during full band. It's better to hear your mistakes than hear nothing at all.

Hello my dearest horn section! It had been weeks since the blog is updated. Im just random. :D

Alot things happened recently, example you feel useless or you cant play well or help your senior or junior. I know that some of you in the section may think that you are useless, PLEASE dont think this way cause you are not. Without you the band and our section will lost one player, one sound, one soul. In other words, we will lost one "kin". The band or section is just like a jigsaw puzzle, it come in a full piece but once one piece is lost the puzzle wont be completed. If you found back the lost one the puzzle will be perfect and beautiful. Like band or section, one give up, quit, lost interest the whole band or section wont sound as one. Therefore, you must persevere and get motivated in band bond in we will get better either as a band or section. We will sound as one, projecting beautiful sound, bond as one. Usually when i lost interest in something this is what i do. I think back all the hard work we have together, memories, how we play hard and stuff it really will lead me back to where i had started. If you lost interest or what try thinking maybe it works on you too. :)
I thinks thats all i want to say bah. :D

You all have been really great section mates to me, great juniors, great friends. I don't have much to complain about. Haha! You all have the initiative to do things, to punish yourself for doing something wrong, and the motivation to work hard. That's not what everyone can or are willing to do, so keep it up!

You're alert and you know what to do. =D Don't worry too much about not being able to figure out rhythm, or not being able to play well. Just practice. Relax and practice! You can do it de.
